Monitoring of forest regeneration in Leaota

From April 15th to 21st, staff of Foundation Conservation Carpathia has been monitoring regeneration on some selected areas in Leaota, which have been purchased by Wildland, over the recent years. Some of them had been replanted by the former owners, but it was unclear how successful the replantation had been and what composition of trees have been planted.
A grid over the forest maps identifies fix points, from which circles with a specific diameter are drawn and all seedlings and young trees in these circles are determined and counted. Counts on these sample plots allow extrapolation over the whole area to estimate the situation of the total existing regeneration.
Based on this regeneration survey, our specialists can create a restoration plan, which calculates how many and what kind of saplings need to be planted, to reach again a natural tree composition.
