In order to identify and evaluate the conservation status of the forest habitats in Leaota, we initiated a study focused on the identification of virgin and quasi-virgin forests. Old beech and spruce trees are guarding the surrounding valleys from Piscul Fiasului and Magura Domneasca and are extremely important for biodiversity conservation, as they represent a home for numerous mushroom and other lower plant species, insects, birds, and mammals. Furthermore, the role of old forests as carbon sinks and their contribution in combating global warming is well known.
