The Great Spotted Woodpecker is widely distributed in the Leaota area and a year-round resident.
It lives both inside the forest and at the edges of it, but depends upon old trees for food and nesting.
It feeds mainly on insects and grubs but forages also on seeds (e.g. beechnuts or acorns) and fruits if insects are scarce. On rare occasions, it also eats eggs, bird chicks and small rodents.
