THE Romanian Carpathians are still blessed with an intact wildlife community. Almost 45% of all European large carnivores wolves, bears and lynxes are roaming these mountains and its surrounding foothills. The Leaota area is home to almost 50 mammal species, which represent almost the complete original system.
ONLY the European bison and the beaver are missing in the scenery. The forest ecosystem provides rich food and sufficient shelter for insectivores, rodents and hares, that in turn form the prey base for foxes, wildcats and various marten species.
